 The world around me shapes my words and thoughts.<\/p>\n

Today, it was the story of a young woman\u2014the valedictorian of an Ottawa high school\u2014being punished for speaking out about the evils of this world. The same education system that taught her to think critically, to speak with conviction, is now trying to silence her.<\/a><\/p>\n

Unclouded<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\n

They say the young don\u2019t see the world<\/div>\n
for what it truly is\u2014<\/div>\n
but maybe they see it better.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Not yet blinkered by<\/div>\n
the cataracts of life:<\/div>\n
compromise, comfort,<\/div>\n
the slow erosion of outrage<\/div>\n
by daily bread<\/div>\n
and discounted dreams.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

They see with eyes<\/div>\n
not fogged by history,<\/div>\n
not dimmed by<\/div>\n
the weary math<\/div>\n
of what will sell,<\/div>\n
what will pass,<\/div>\n
what won\u2019t rock the boat<\/div>\n
too much.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

We sit idle in the couch cushions<\/div>\n
we\u2019ve moulded to our shape,<\/div>\n
not noticing how long<\/div>\n
we\u2019ve sunk there,<\/div>\n
how the springs gave out<\/div>\n
years ago.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

But the young rise,<\/p>\n

refusing to settle long enough <\/p>\n

to shape the world to their laurels,<\/p>\n

choosing instead to push against walls,<\/p>\n

and break down barriers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

They rise,<\/div>\n
and their voices cut through the hush\u2014<\/div>\n
sharp, unwavering,<\/div>\n
not yet trimmed<\/div>\n
to fit inside<\/div>\n
what we call acceptable<\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

A young woman<\/div>\n
at a microphone,<\/div>\n
naming genocide<\/div>\n
in her valedictory breath\u2014<\/div>\n
truth ringing louder<\/div>\n
than the applause.<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

They rise,<\/div>\n
and the world stirs:<\/div>\n
from courtroom steps<\/div>\n
to climate marches,<\/div>\n
from drowned coasts<\/div>\n
to burning hills,<\/div>\n
they walk out of our silence<\/div>\n
and into the storm.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

The next generation<\/div>\n
of warriors\u2014<\/div>\n
not armed with cynicism,<\/div>\n
but clarity\u2014<\/div>\n
released like arrows<\/div>\n
into a sky<\/div>\n
we thought too heavy to pierce.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
<\/div>\n
And we call them<\/div>\n
idealists,<\/div>\n
as if that were<\/div>\n
a sin.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

But maybe\u2014<\/div>\n
just maybe\u2014<\/div>\n
they are the ones<\/div>\n
who see clearly,<\/div>\n
because they haven\u2019t yet<\/div>\n
learned to look away.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
